1. Interrogative Adjectives: Quel vs. Lequel, What's the Difference?

 

Interrogative adjectives modify nouns while asking questions. The representative interrogative adjectives, quel and lequel, seem similar but have slightly different usages.

 

1.1. Quel: Which, What

  • Quel changes its form to quelle, quels, or quelles depending on gender and number.
  • It is mainly used when the range of choices is broad or not specified.

Quel livre lis-tu? (kel leevr lee tu?) – What book are you reading? Quelle est ta couleur préférée? (kel eh ta couler prefereh?) – What is your favorite color? Quels films aimes-tu? (kel film em tu?) – What movies do you like?

 

1.2. Lequel: Which One, Which of Them

 

  • Lequel changes its form to laquelle, lesquels, or lesquelles depending on gender and number.
  • It is mainly used when the range of choices is limited or when choosing from things already mentioned.

Tu as deux stylos. Lequel veux-tu? (tu ah duh steelo. lekel vuh tu?) – You have two pens. Which one do you want? J'ai vu plusieurs robes. Laquelle préfères-tu? (j'ai vu plusieur rob. lakelle prefere tu?) – I saw several dresses. Which one do you prefer?

 

2. Interrogative Adverbs: Combien, Comment? How Much, How?

 

Interrogative adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs while asking questions. There are various interrogative adverbs, but today we'll look at the most frequently used ones, combien and comment.

 

2.1. Combien: How Much, How Many

 

  • It is used when asking about numbers.

Combien coûte ce sac? (combien coot seuh sac?) – How much is this bag? Combien de frères et sœurs as-tu? (combien de frer eh soeur ah tu?) – How many brothers and sisters do you have?

 

2.2. Comment: How

 

  • It is used when asking about methods, conditions, opinions, etc.

Comment ça va? (commen sa va?) – How are you? Comment trouves-tu ce restaurant? (commen troov tu seuh restaurant?) – What do you think of this restaurant?

 

3. Practicing Creating Various Questions
